Chapter 16

“Well, thank you for your time, gentlemen,” the older man said as he stood up from the glass conference table. His bald head glistened under the overhead lights.

“No, thank you, Jack,” Tim said eagerly with a broad smile as he popped out of his leather swivel chair.

Clayton’s response was a lot more sluggish. He slowly rose from his seat while Tim leaned forward and shook the older man’s hand. Clayton did the same, though his handshake was more halfhearted.

Clayton had let Tim do most of the talking during their presentation. Though this was a potentially lucrative design project for a lobbyist group in D.C. that should have required more involvement from him—especially on a make-or-break day like today, when they were explaining all their design ideas—he hadn’t felt up to it. His mind was somewhere else.

He was still thinking about the surprise visit from Melody a couple of days ago and was debating whether he had treated her too harshly.

Please! Are you kidding? Don’t be fooled by her, man, he would tell himself. She’s still the same old Melody. You’ll figure that out time and time again.

But was that really true? The instant he would resolve that she was a self-involved bitch who didn’t deserve the time of day, she would do something to the contrary that showed him her vulnerability and kind spirit. The moment he would conclude that she didn’t care about other people or their feelings, she would seek him out and let him know that she did care about his opinion of her and wanted to look better in his eyes.

It was so frustrating how his thoughts toward her swung back and forth like a pendulum. He wished he could just forget about her.

Write her off and call it a day, he told himself.

But that was easier said than done. She was their client again, after all. He would have to see her and interact with her. There was no avoiding that.

“Excellent work, guys,” Jack said with a nod and a smile. “It’s exactly what our law firm is looking for. We don’t want to be just another stodgy old office building on K Street.” He wagged his finger. “You know everyone forgets that there’s a hip, younger administration in the White House now. We want to be young and hip, too. We want to reflect that in our image.”

In glaring contrast to his proclamation, he adjusted the lapels of his stodgy pinstripe suit and then tapped the knot of his sensible red tie.

“Now I’ll have to talk it over with the other partners, but I feel pretty safe in saying we’ll be ready to sign a contract next week.”

Tim’s eyes widened. “Why that’s great, Jack! I mean…absolutely wonderful.”

“Yeah, it’s…wonderful,” Clayton said absently.

Jack and Tim walked out of the conference room with Clayton trailing behind them. When they reached the elevators, Jack shook their hands again.

“Enjoy the rest of your morning, gentlemen,” he said as an overhead bell chimed and the elevator doors slowly opened.

“We certainly will, Jack.
